[kent-grads] Alumni donations & chemistry

Coming in on this one - hear hear on comment on alumni
donations to their University. (The 40th Anniversary Fund
is already at nearly £6,500!)

The generosity of the British to those affected by the
Tsunanmi has been/is wonderful - and done in the same
post-Thatcher culture and the tax context that we've
had since the last budget changes re giving to charity.

People in the UK ARE incredibly generous, and I think those
changes, that is, recent improvements to Gift Aid and 'Give
as you earn' are incentives to give. We are fervently
hoping the Government will soon agree to match private
donations to Universities, just as the Hong Kong Government
has done for some years.

Some might think that fundraising for Universities is going
to be harder in the next year because of Tsunami; I don't
think so - we've seen what givers can and will do; my
expectations are raised. People need to remember that
without the research knowledge and educated people provided
by Universities, the help available to those suffering from
the Tsunami would be incalculably less effective.

I know there are Kent alumni involved directly and
indirectly in helping those affected by the Tsunami - not
least as donors. If you know of any who are directly
involved, please let me know.

But I wanted to just comment on the chemistry issue as
well:

The last intake of Chemistry was in 2003, so the last
intake is currently still going through the system on the 3
year BSc and the 4 year MPharm. Chemistry is still being
offered as modules in the highly successful forensic
science degree and the new heritage science degree...
These are subjects that recruit unlike, sadly, chemistry
itself these days.

Happy New Year to you all.
