[kent-grads] Periodic news from the University of Kent

Conscious that kent-grads has been very quiet of late, I hope people will be
interested to read of recent top level appointments.

Dr Robin Baker, currently the Deputy Director-General at the British Council
in
London, has been appointed to a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor post at the
University.

At the British Council, he is responsible for operations worldwide, for the
Council's strategy and for its relations with government departments. He is
a graduate
of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, a Fellow of University
College London and was named a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St
George (CMG) in the 2005 New Years Honours List. He will take up his new
post on 12 September 2005.

Dr Baker said: 'I am delighted to be joining the University of Kent. Having
spent two decades working in the British Council promoting the excellence of
British higher education overseas, I have a good idea of the opportunities
and challenges facing UK universities. The University of Kent is an exciting
place to be: its work in Europe, internationally and within the greater Kent
region is pioneering in many respects, and I look forward to being
involved.'

The University has also appointed David Nightingale to the post of Deputy
Vice-Chancellor and Professor Keith Mander to the post of
Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Previously they both held their posts on a fixed term
basis. Both now become permanent from 1 August 2005.

Commenting on the new appointments, Vice-Chancellor Professor David Melville
said, 'I am delighted to have such a strong team to lead the University into
the future. Robin Baker's outstanding experience in management and his
unparalleled understanding of European and international matters will be of
great value as we develop further our ambitious plans in the years to come.'
